Subsequent Endorsements

Illinois State Board of Education Subsequent Endorsement Options

The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) has specific subsequent teaching endorsements that can be added to a Professional Educator License (PEL).  As a licensure candidate, you may want to pursue adding subsequent endorsements.  ISBE provides current information on subsequent endorsement options and requirements.

State endorsement requirements are subject to change without notice and you are not guaranteed protection from such changes.  It is in your best interest to complete the requirements and apply for subsequent endorsements as soon as possible.  Should the Illinois State Board of Education require changes prior to the completion of endorsement requirements and those endorsement(s) being added to your PEL, you may be required to complete additional coursework, testing, etc.

Subsequent Endorsements with Specific Coursework Requirements

The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign has specific courses that meet Illinois State Board of Education requirements for some subsequent endorsements.  Please select the links from the menu to review the coursework that meets these requirements for the following:

  • Bilingual Education
  • English as a Second Language
  • Reading Teacher
  • Technology Specialist

Requesting Subsequent Endorsements

Current students should apply for subsequent endorsements at the time the licensure application form is submitted through the Student Portal.  Subsequent endorsements with completed requirements will be included when the licensure application is processed.  Subsequent endorsements with incomplete requirements can be added later, once requirements are verified to be complete.  For teachers who have already been licensed, contact CoTE about adding new subsequent endorsements for which you qualify.

Coursework Notes

  • Per State requirements, no grade below a C- may be used for licensure, endorsement, or approval.
  • Coursework used for subsequent endorsements must be 100-level or higher, e.g., credit hours from MATH 098 can not count toward subsequent endorsement requirements.
