About Licensure

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign offers 31 programs leading to P-12 licensure.  Those programs are housed in six colleges and two schools and all are accredited by the Illinois State Board of Education.  A complete list of programs may be found by clicking on the Programs link at left.

The Council on Teacher Education does not admit candidates to licensure programs.  For information on admission requirements and procedures, undergraduates should contact the office of the college that houses the program.  Graduate students should contact the department that houses the program.

The UIUC licensure policy requires all applicants to licensure programs pass the Illinois basic skills requirement prior to admission.  Many of our graduate programs also require passing of the content test in the major teaching field prior to admission.

Applicants are advised that certain felony convictions, enumerated in Articles 21B-80 of the School Code of Illinois prohibit licensure or employment in public schools.  All candidates for licensure through the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign are required to undergo a criminal background check prior to their first field experience.  Questions pertaining to this matter should be addressed to the Council.

The licensure office is located in 505 E. Green, Ste. 203, Champaign, IL, 61820.  Hours are 8:30-12 and 1-5, Monday through Friday.  The phone number for licensure matters is 217-333-7195.
